Mrs. Dubose and Miss Maudie are both neighbors of Jem and Scout. However, they are different in personality. Mrs. Dubose is an old, sick, and a racist woman. She is grumpy and she offends people straightforward. However she is a very brave woman. She is addicted to morphine, and she fights it, even though she knows she’s going to die soon. Miss Maudie is a positive, bright lady. She likes to take care of the garden and bake cakes. She is like a very old friend that one can have. I think her understandings of feelings makes possible for her to have a close relationship with Scout. She is equal and reasonable. In the story, I think Mrs. Dubose is a self confident but a brave role that gives a resonance to the readers, and Miss Maudie is a likable character that makes the readers smile whenever the author talks about her.

Did either of the characters teach the children (or us) anything?

Mrs. Dubose is an old lady that is very sick. She is also racist, and makes fun of that Atticus is defending a black man. When she dies, Jem and Scout realise that she was no that bad of a person after all.
Mrs. Maudie is totally different from Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Maudie is a very happy and optimistic. She likes to be outside most of the time, fixing and gardening her plants.

Just as Jenny and Isabela said, Mrs. Dubose is a sick, bad-tempered person, unlike Miss Maudie. Miss Maudie understands Scout and Jem and appreciates them. Mrs. Dubose is a symbol that is being considered as braveness. Harper Lee chose her as this symbol because it tells us how brave she was when she was dying, and when she had nobody to support her in her last days of life. Even though her personality was not that great, she was brave to die with courage and her self-respect. Miss Maudie tells us not to stereotype others. She is being stereotyped as all the adults in Maycomb. However, she is a reliable friend who is also an adult, and respects the children's thoughts and ideas.

Mrs. Dubose is an old lady that lives in Maycomb. She is similar to Miss Maudie since both spend alot of time outside. But still, Mrs. Dubose is different from Miss Maudie since she is a very racist person and Miss Maudie is a rather bright, positive, nice person. Mrs. Dubose is adicted to morphine since the doctors made her take it against the pain. This caused her to be so insulting.
Miss Maudie is, like I said, a nice, positive, bright person. She loves her garden and spends more time in it than inside her house. She also is known to bake very good cakes. Even Miss Staphany is after the recipe for them.
Miss Maudie and Mrs. Dubose are both in the story to teach the children something or, in Miss Maudies case, to help them out. Miss Maudie tells Jem and Scout about Arthur Radley as a child and Mrs. Dubose teaches the children a lot after she dies or the children learn by spending time with her.

Everyone's descriptions about Mrs. Dubose and Miss Maudie seem right to me. Mrs. Dubose's role was to teach the children that truly being brave is not being a big man with a gun, like Atticus basically said. Instead, it is being able to continue doing what you were going to do even when you know you will die. In Mrs. Dubose's case, it is getting rid of her morphine addiction. Miss Maudie did not follow the common Southern lady stereotypes. I think her role in this novel was to show that stereotypes are not always true.

I disagree with Uin when she says that Ms. Maudie's role in the story is to teach that Stereotypes are not always true. I think that her role is to teach that life is something that you should appreciate instead of whine about. Life is something that one should think as being more good than worse. That is the true spirit of life. So, that is why i disagree with Uin

Miss Maudie and Mrs. Dubose are both in the story to teach the kids something. Miss Maudie helps them out as well. She also teaches them not to stereotype.

Mrs. Dubose is a bad tempered old lady. She is racist against the African-Americans. She makes fun of Atticus for defending one.

Miss Maudie is the opposite of Mrs. Dubose. She is very optimistic, and is not racist. She likes to water her garden and likes to bake cakes on special occasions.
