Chapters 10-11 Atticus

What brave thing does Atticus do in Chapter 10? Why are Scout and Jem shocked? Would you have done the same thing? Why or why not?

In this chapter, Jem spots a dog on the street. He informs Cal, but she noticed something peculiar about it.

"I swear to god there's a mad dog down the street... I know a mad dog when I see one." (93)

I don't believe there was a vaccine for rabies back then, so naturally Cal freaks out and alerts everyone in the neighborhood.

"Every wood door within range of vision was closed tight." (94)

Word about the rabid dog makes it to the Maycomb sheriff and he drives over with Atticus. After some dispute, the sheriff convinces Atticus to shoot the dog.

"I haven't shot a gun in thirty years-"

"I'd feel mighty comfortable if you did..." (96)

Atticus shot, and he scored. Jem and Scout are shocked by this for one good main reason: they had always though that Atticus was not willing to shoot a gun. At this point they both thought that Atticus was somehow less of a man and a father because he didn't shoot (they learn that this is not the case in the next chapter).

"Atticus was feeble: he was nearly fifty...Our father didn't do anything. He worked in and office, not in a drugstore... or do anything that could possibly arouse the admiration of anyone... he never went hunting, he did not play poker or fish or drink..." (89)

I would definitely have done the same thing (provided I knew how to shoot a gun and could aim at anything farther than three feet away). The dog was sick and was going to die soon. Putting it out of it's misery would have been a nice thing. It also could have saved the life of others.

Atticus shot a mad dog. He did it in one shot. If he had missed, the bullet would have gone through Boo Radley's house. This shot, being a 'one shot' shot, requires bravery and self-confidence. Scout and Jem were shocked because they never knew that Atticus could shoot so well, let alone even shoot. I would have not done the same thing because I have no idea how to shoot. But even if I had Atticus's skills, I would have not done the same thing because I do not have the bravery nor the confidence.

“With movements so swift and simultaneous, Atticus’s hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder.”(Lee 96)
What Atticus did was shoot Tim Johnson, the dog who had rabies, down. This surprised Scout and Jem because, some pages before, Scout talked about that his dad could not do more than simple, boring things, unlike her friend’s dads. She thought that playing the Jew’s harp was nothing. She wished her dad did something else. Scout and Jem were also surprised because Atticus despises guns and they thought he didn’t know how to use them. I could actually agree it is surprising seeing a person do something that they “aren’t supposed to do.”
I believe I would have acted the same as Atticus because, even though you despise something that you are good at, you have to do what you have to do. If he wouldn’t have shot the dog down, it could have bit somebody else and, in those times, there was no cure for the dog or the person bitten except death. What I don’t understand is why Atticus hates guns and shooting if he is good at that. He should be proud that he can shoot things down with only one try, or at least I would be.

The brave thing that Atticus does was that he shot a mad dog. The mad dog was outside and Calpurnia asked Atticus to come. Heck Tate brought a rifle and he tells to Atticus to shoot the dog. Jem and Scout really got amazed because Atticus really did shoot the dog. Jem and Scout are really shocked because they really didn’t think that Atticus (his father) would shoot the dog. I really would do the same thing Atticus did. I would do the same because maybe the dog would even feel worse, and especially when before, they didn’t have cures for dogs. The dog would have felt worse and it could have bitten people also. And maybe the people could also get sick. So, I would really do the same thing Atticus did, but I would do it carefully because I could shoot someone else and it would be very dangerous. So, I would have to be very careful.

All of Scout's and Jem's lives Atticus has always said how he would never shot, let alone carry a gun. In this chapter (as aubrey said), Jem noticed that a mad dog, or a dog with rabies had been walking up the street. After informing Calpurnia about it, Calpurnia runs outside and tells the whole nieghborhood so that everyone is safe. Later, Atticus arrives with the Sheriff. The action that shocked Scout and Jem the most about Atticus was that he took the gun from the Sheriff and shot the dog with perfect aim.
I think that I would have been surprised as well is I were Scout or Jem because they heard something all their lives and then all of a sudden it changes. I would have done the same thing if I were Atticus because (like Aubrey mentioned) there was not any vaccine for rabies during that time, so the only way to make sure no one ran the chance of getting it was to kill the dog.

There was a mad dog coming into the neighborhood. Everyone was told to go inside and to be careful for the mad dog. So the men stayed outside with rifles. And Atticus was the one who shot the mad dog. Jem and Scout never ecpected that out of all the people in the world, Atticus would shoot the dog. Jem and Scout thought that Atticus wouldn't even hurt a fly. But they soon found out that they were wrong. They were told that when Atticus was younger, Atticus was known to be the best person to carry a rifle around in that time.

Jem and Scout saw a mad dog in the street. They went to call Calpurnia because they thought the dog might have been sick. Cal realized that it was crazy, so everyone had gone to their houses. The street was deserted except for the dog coming closer and closer to the Radley house. Atticus had no choice but to shoot the dog, since he was the best shooter in Maycomb County and if he had not done it, the Radleys would be exposed in danger. Atticus took a decision, which he had not told his children. Scout and Jem were shocked, since they thought that Atticus was only a calm, logical person, and not the type that would hold a gun. IF I were Atticus, I would definitely do the same thing, even though it might be dangerous. It might look too risky, because one miss would go right through the Radley house, and can surely harm someone inside, but I would still do it for the security of the Radleys.

Jem spotted a dog on the street. He tells Cal about it and she notices something weird about that dog. She believed it was a mad dog, which means it has rabies. Atticus shot the dog and he had only one try to do it. If he had shot incorrectly, the bullet would have gone through the Radley Place. He shot the dog and someone mentioned that Atticus was still the "deadest shot" in Maycomb. The kids are shocked because they did not expect that from Atticus. This act required bravery and confidence. They did not know Atticus could do something like this. They thought he was good for nothing.
If I were Scout or Jem, I would have also been surprised that Atticus has the ability to do such thing.
If I were Atticus, I would have done the same thing because if I did not, worse things could happen. The dog could have harmed others.

Atticus, shot a mad dog in a "one shot" shot. This was a very brave thing from Atticus. Maycomb's citizens life was on danger because the mad dog could have done something to somebody. This surprised Jem and Scout since their father was always so calm. Later on, they found that Atticus was the greatest shooter in Maycomb. He could shoot something from a point in which nobody else could. That is why this "hard, one shot" was given to him.
