Lula's importance is to show that there were also racists within the black community. Reverend Sykes is important because he was someone who put the differences away between him, Scout, and Jem. I am not sure who Zeebo was...Sorry...

I think what Sheril said about Lula and Reverend Sykes’s importance and role is right. But to me, Reverend Sykes also seemed to prove that there are nice and sane African-American people. Zeebo could easily prove that as well, but his role seemed more like it was to show that African-American people are smart enough to read and write. The only thing they needed was the opportunity, and they would learn just as well as any white person.

I agree with what Uin and Sheril said. Lula's role is that there are racists all around the world, not just the white people. Reverend Sykes role explains that there are people who do not discriminate the African-Americans or the white people. He shows how he detests racism and proves his dislike by not causing racism, but trying to end it. An action that he did was when he took the kids into the balcony of the second floor. As Uin said, Zeebo represents that just because of how he looks, does not mean that he is not smart.

All of these characters are important to give us more examples how people were during that time period. Lula showed us how many black people hated the white and thought of them the same way many white people thought of black people. For example that blacks were not allowed to use white churches. Some people then, wouldn't let whites use churches for African-Americans. She is also an example of how the black people insulted themselves for being black. Revernd Sykes was there because he is the opposite of Lula, he "put the differences away between him, Scout, and Jem" (Sheril). Zeebo is an interesting figure. He seems to be send by god to show the whites that what they think is wrong. Blacks were often seen as useless and uncapable of doing anything or learning anything. But Zeebo is able to read and write and, in fact, very smart.

All these character's help us know more about the African American community. Lula shows that there are racists among the black community. Reverend Sykes that there are nice black people and he is the one who puts the differences apart. Zeebo shows that there are smart black people and that they are not any dumber.

As Sheril said, Lula's importance was to show that there is racism in the black community against the whites. Not only the whites against the blacks. Reverend Sykes showed that even though the whites were racist against the blacks, the blacks would put away their differences when needed even though the white gave them such unfair treatment. Zeebo proves that not only white people can read and write. Black people can too.
