Jem is now starting to grow up, and with that comes his new attitude. This new attitude is a stage of Jem maturing, and when he is maturing he unconsciously and consciously thinks he is in a way and adult. He is getting older, but in true life he is still a child. An example of Jem maturing is that Calpurinia now calls him mister instead of just plain Jem. I think that Scout is really noticing these changes, and they affect her the most. This is because she is used to playing with Jem, and always having Jem there. Now, Jem acts like he does not care.

Jem matures during these chapters when he turned twelve. Jem tells Scout to act more like a girl. When Jem told her this, Scout was upset. Jem is thinking more about what is happening and he is thinking it more with details and more accurate. Scout is noticing Jem’s changes since he told her that she needed to act more like a girl. Jem and Scout really played with each other, and they used to mess around with things. Scout really gets upset and I think that she really doesn’t like it because Jem now treats her differently of how he used to treat her. But no matter of what age they are, Jem will still care about his little sister Scout.

Jem is growing up and as every teenager he just wants a normal sisiter. A sisiter that know how to stay what she is, a girl. This obviously makes Scout feel very bad because she thought that her brother loved her just the way she was. Jem starts realizing that life isn't just playing games and going to school. This means that now he is mostly thinking like a grown up. He doesn't play and he doesn't care about those types of things anymore. He is more worried about his father. I think that even though this is happening he still loves Scout, but he doesn't want to show it that much.

As Jem grows, his relationship with Scout changes. He is becoming more mature, and "leaving" Scout behind. Jem starts to comprehend problems that Scout can't. Jem might get irritated with Scout, since he needs someone of his age, or an adult, to talk to. As Jem grows, he also needs his space to think about. It would be normal for him to tell Scout to stop acting childish, since he is comparing himself to Scout. He tells Scout to act ladylike because it is a little embarrassing that his sister is different than the other girls. As an older brother, he can sometimes get mad at her, since she is younger; but he still takes good care of Scout and worries for her.

The relationship between Scout and Jem used to be very light. Jem would basicly want for Scout to wear pants instead of a dress. He would enforce her to do so because when they played she would be limited by the dress in what she would be able to do. Now, that Jem is growing up, he doesn't want to play anymore. He is interested in other stuff for which does not include Scout and that therefore doesn't require of Scout to wear a dress. Since "Mr. Jem" is also around adults more often and has more adult influence, he beliefs that girls shouldn't wear pants. He is unconsciously taking Scout as a bad example for the family when, before, he had supported and defended her in situations like these. Jem also has the bad luck of all these things going on around him while he is growing. And pert of puberty is that you sometimes can't control your feelings. His father being called a (n)lover by so many people is hard for him. This get's him into quite a bit of trouble sometimes. For exampl when he ripped off flowers in Miss Dubose garden. The enviornment is also not really the enviornment that you want your children to grow up in. Jem is feeling a bit confused by all that is going on around him. He has mixed feelings. His father, whom he always ssaw as the perfect example for him, is doing something EVERYBODY else sees as a bad thing. His Father never said anything about Scout wearing Jeans. Nor did a couple of other people of close influence to him. But people like Aunt Alexandra, who are very much respected in Maycomb county, are saying that it is not appropiate for a girl to wear Jeans. This causes Scout and Jem's relationship to get worse and they comunicate less. They no longer share everything to each other that is on their mind. Scout feels left out and alone. Especially because Dill is not with her anymore and nobody has time around her house. She often stays with Calpurnia who, probably, understands her.

I think everyone that wrote before me is right, but I agree with Sora the most. “Leaving Scout behind” seemed like what I was thinking. Jem feels superior and orders Scout around more. He once said “That’s because you can’t hold something in your mind but a little while. It’s different with grown folks.” Scout felt angry because of this. Their relationship does not get more distant, though. These things are only temporary when Jem feels down. Jem’s mood changes a lot because of puberty, so these fights happen a lot. But Jem cares about Scout. He cares, and his way of caring for his sister just changed. Before, he used to let Scout do what she wanted to do because that was what she wanted, but after chapter twelve he knew what was better for her and bossed her around more. The book’s ‘part two’ begins in chapter twelve, indicating the difference in everyone’s point of view.

P.S.(?): Boy, did Yannick write a lot?

Jem is beginning to through the period of his life when everything begins to change. He is getting taller, he's thinking differently of things and he's treating people much differently. However, this does not affect his relationship with Scout very much. They still talk to each other about things but they do not go running around all crazy around town as much as they did before with Dill. Aunt Alexandra has something to smile about when this happens. Jem is not acting like a little kid anymore. He is looking at the world with a new pair of eyes and also thinking about things that he did a few year before that now torment him.

I will disagree with sora with the fact that Jem is "Leaving scout behind). First of all, They are still very good friends and they still go around town together and they still look are totally obsessed with the radley place. They are good friends and there is still a bond between brother and sister. Just because Jem is growing up does not mean that he will make scout go away and leave him alone. He is much wiser and will keep on talking to her and giving his opinion to the way that she beats up kids around town. So, the fact is that there is no way that Jem will ever leave Scout.

Jem is starting to grow up and to mature. He believes in different things and comprehends more what is going on. Their relationship used to be very active in between both of them. As Jem is growing, he does different things instead of playing. They still talk and do stuff together, but not like they used to before. Jem is getting into another world and Scout is being left behind.

In response to Andy's comment about Sora's comment, I agreed with Sora because I thought she meant that he was leaving Scout behind in the mental way. Jem was maturing and was mentally getting further away from Scout, but later Scout will grow up too and catch up to his "mental level," should I say? This is a funny way to put it, but to me "leaving Scout behind" meant that Jem's brain was leaving Scout's brain behind.

Jem is growing up. Something that brings new attitude, new point of views, new dislikes and likes, new personality. He is now concious of the world around him. His relationship with Scout is different. It changes. Scout now sees Jem as a brother who is always moody, and trying to boss her around. Scout does not like anyone bossing around and this is why they have some fights during these chapters, because of the changes Jem is going through and he is letting it out on Scout.
