Mr. Raymond is a white man who was married to an African-American. They have children that are mixed. The poor children never find anywhere to go to since the African-Americans don't want the since their part white. And the whites don't want them because they are part black. Mr. Raymond was about to get married to a white woman when she killed herself with a shotgun. "They say it was bacause she found out about his colored woman..."(Lee 161). Ever since the wedding Mr Raymond seemed to be drunk. But Scout, Jem, and Dill find out later that he is just pretending to be drunk and that he doesn't drink whiskey like they suspected he'd drink, but plain Coca-Cola. He said that the "folks" don't really like the way he lives. He then pretends that he just lives like that because he is drunk ("He is always drunk and doesn't live right. But he can't help it. Bless his heart!").

Dolphus Raymond is a white man who decides to spend most of his time with African-Americans. He is known as a drunk, first of all because most of the people in Maycomb would not spend time with black Americans if they were white, and because he always carried a Coca-Cola bottle with paper wrapped around it so that people would not see what he was drinking. People began to suspect that there was whisky in the bottle because they thought that that would be the only reason why he would be hiding it.
I think that Mr. Raymond is introduced in the story because he represents someone who does not care about what other people say as long as he is happy with himself. What Jem and Dill learn about Dolphus Raymond is that he only covers the Coca-Cola bottle with paper to make people think that he is drinking whisky. In reality, he is drinking Coca-Cola. The reason why he does this is because white people in Maycomb could not understand why a white man would spend time with black people other than them being drunk.

Mr. Dolphus Raymond is a white man that married a black woman. People think he is weird because of that. I completely agree with Sheril about this. They do not understand why he would like African-Americans. The only reason they can think of is him being drunk. I think he is mocking the people that make fun of him. They are too stupid to realize that he is not drunk, and it is just his opinion that African-Americans are not bad. Jem and Dill learn that he is not so bad after all, but they decided to still keep their distance because his opinions are very different from the normal southern white people.

Mr. Dolphus Raymond prefers to be with the African-Americans rather than the white people. He prefers the African-Americans because they do not complicate their lives, unlike the white people. There is too much discrimination and racism around the white people, making him feel sick of all of it. He is one of the white people that are different from all the society, which makes him act drunk, making his life simpler. He acts this way because if he does not, the white people would bother him of how a disgrace he is. He believes on what is right and wrong, and does not see the “crime” about liking African-Americans. It would be too complicated to explain his beliefs, and it is obvious that the white people would not understand him. He knows that acting like one of them is bad, deciding to live differently.

I completely agree with everyone that has posted before me. First of all, Mr. Raymond is a man that does not give a hoot about what people think about him as long as he is happy with the way that he lives. Second, Mr Raymond is unique in a sort of way. He brings up the idea that everyone has his/her own likes and dislikes and that can not be criticized by anyone no matter who. It's like looking at the difference between water and fire. One prefers to be soft and the other prefers to be harsh. They do not criticize each other in any way. They can each destroy each other but they realize that they are different and respect that.
